Geocaching Copper

On May 5, 2011, the web site www.geodetecting.com announced plans to introduce a new entry in the international geocoin catalog. Just over five months later, on September 27th, 2011, the launch was official.

The popular hobby of “geocaching” began more than ten years ago when the US government removed selective access to global satellites for GPS devices making them more accurate. When the announcement was made, GPS enthusiasts soon began to chat online about the possibilities of this new technology and a hobby was born; “The Great American GPS Stash Hunt.” A rule was also informally established: “find some stuff, leave some stuff.”

One of the more popular items left in these “stashes” (later changed to “caches”) are custom minted coins. The new Geo-Detecting Copper Medallion was designed and issued to further inspire and motivate enthusiastic treasure seekers and should prove to be a valuable find for those with the skills to reach their goal. That is, Geo-Detecting.com is 70% metal detecting and 30% geocaching. Fans of both audiences are captured by creating the perfect combination of using a metal geocoin that can be detected and then recorded online.

Geocoins are popular in the geocaching community and have been for years, but whereas many of the currently available geocoins are made of brass or lesser grade metals, the GeoDetecting.com Copper Medallions are minted in one ounce of .999 fine, investment-grade copper! This unique design features a treasure hunting motif on the obverse with the image of the treasure chest on the reverse. The treasure chest is circled by the text: “Metal Detecting, Discover, Seek, Find, Cache, Geo Detecting” along with the weight and purity.

The American Open Currency Standard was commissioned to mint these new medallions. In the near future, GeoDetecting.com plans on adding a numbering system where members can track their coins from one member’s treasure cache to another, thus increasing the value of each piece even further as it circulates and builds a history.

GeoDetecting.com also plans to release a new mobile device application at the beginning of 2012 on the Android, followed by an iTunes release and a revamped web site, replacing the current beta site at GEODetecting.com.

There are over 6 million members engaged in geocaching and over 1.5 million caches hidden around the world. GeoDetecting.com hopes to capture 10% of the market share by targeting hobbyists who also enjoy metal detecting, hiking, biking, and hunting for REAL treasure.
