Crow Agency, Montana, 25 June 2013 – To mark the 137th anniversary of the Battle of Little Bighorn, the Apsáalooke (Crow) Nation created a silver commemorative medallion.

The piece features the portraits of Sitting Bull (Tȟatȟáŋka Íyotake) and General George Custer and the text “Battle of Little Bighorn June 25 & 26, 1876”. The detailed images were hand sculpted by noted New York artist Luigi Badia. The reverse carries a full rendering of the official seal of the Apsáalooke Nation. The seal includes key symbols like the pipe, a tobacco bundle, a sweat lodge, and war bonnets. The medallion is marked for weight and purity with the “1 troy ounce.999 fine silver” and “AOCS APPROVED” designations. Minting was done by Mulligan Mint.

The medallion was released exclusively in limited supply to attendees of Crow Native Days. This is an annual celebration of the Apsáalooke culture and the anniversary of the American Indian victory. Although the Native Days event has ended, collectors can find the medallion online at OpenCurrencyX.

This project was another example of the creative initiatives flourishing under the leadership of recently elected chairman Darrin Old Coyote. Ceivert La Forge, an administrator in the tribe’s LLC Department, said, “With an unemployment rate of nearly 80%, the new administration is doing all it can to improve conditions. We believe interest in this significant moment in American history will make this piece a success.”
